Panther is the common name for a German tank deployed in World War II that was in service from mid-1943 until the end of the war in Europe in 1945. Until 1944, its official designation was Panzerkampfwagen V Panther (‘armored fighting vehicle model V Panther’) and its designation in the German military vehicle inventory was Sd.Kfz. 171. On February 27, 1944, Hitler ordered that the Roman numeral V be removed from the designation.
