The FV4034 Challenger 2, whose name means "challenger," is a British main battle tank in service with the armies of the United Kingdom and Oman. It was manufactured by the British company Alvis Vickers, now part of BAE Systems Land and Armaments. The Challenger 2 is the third vehicle to bear this name: the first was the A30 Challenger, a tank based on the Mk VIII Cromwell and armed with a 17-pounder gun; the second was the Challenger 1, which was the British Army's main battle tank during the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s.
