The Panzer II was a light tank developed in Germany in the 1930s and used in World War II. The name is an abbreviation of its official German designation, Panzerkampfwagen II (armored fighting vehicle model II), abbreviated as PzKpfw II. The German military vehicle inventory designation for this tank was Sd.Kfz. 121. It was designed as an interim measure while other tanks were being developed and played a significant role in the early years of the conflict, during the Polish and French campaigns. It was withdrawn from the front lines in late 1942, and production of the tank ceased in 1943, although its chassis was used for other armored vehicles.
