The M13/40 tank was designed to replace the Italian Army's Fiat L3, Fiat L6/40, and Fiat M11/39 at the beginning of World War II. Its design was influenced by the British Vickers 6-Ton and was based on the modified chassis of the earlier Fiat M11/39. In fact, M11/39 production was drastically reduced to allow for the start of M13/40 production. Although classified as a medium tank, the M13/40 was closer to a contemporary light tank in terms of armor and firepower. 779 M13/40 tanks were produced.
