The Panzer III was a medium tank developed in Germany in the late 1930s and widely used during World War II. The name is an abbreviation of its official German designation, Panzerkampfwagen III (armored fighting vehicle model III). It was intended to fight against other armored fighting vehicles and serve alongside the support tank. However, when faced with the Soviet T-34, the Panzer III became obsolete, and the Germans needed more powerful anti-tank weapons. Since the Panzer IV had a larger turret and mounted the long 75 mm KwK 40 gun, it took over the role of the Panzer III in tank battles.
