The Leopard I, initially designated simply as Leopard, is a German-designed and manufactured main battle tank that entered service in 1965. It was developed at a time when HEAT warheads were believed to offer limited value to conventional heavy armor, so it focused on firepower, with a gun similar to the British 105 mm L7, and on cross-country capability superior to other tanks of its era. It has been acquired by Germany, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey, and Lebanon.
