The M1 Abrams is a main battle tank produced in the United States by General Dynamics. It is the primary armored vehicle of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Australia. It is named in honor of General Creighton Abrams, commander-in-chief of U.S. troops in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972, and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1974. It is a well-armed and heavily armored vehicle, designed for modern armored warfare.5 The most notable features of the M1 Abrams include the use of a powerful gas turbine engine, the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and a novel ammunition storage system in special compartments that, in the event of an explosion, redirect the force outwards, increasing the crew's chances of survival. Weighing approximately 68 tons, it is one of the heaviest tanks currently in service.
