The Leopard 1 is a German-designed and manufactured main battle tank that entered service in 1965. It was developed at a time when HEAT warheads were believed to offer limited value to conventional heavy armor, so the focus was on firepower, with a gun similar to the British 105mm L7, and on cross-country capability better than other tanks of its era. It has been acquired by Germany, Australia, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey, and Lebanon. The tank's design began in the 1950s as a collaborative project between West Germany and France, later joined by Italy.
